Institutional Distinctiveness

Introduction:

Silchar College came into existence in 1994 in this interior locality with an objective to open up doors of opportunities for higher education to the downtrodden students with poor economic stability as well as poor percentage in the secondary education.

Vision and Mission of the College:

The institution has a clear vision of upgrading itself into the greatest learning environment possible and facilitate access to quality higher education for the socially and economically backward sections of the society.

Core Values of the College:

The core values include competent learning, character building, cohesive education and social responsibility.

The institution endeavours to enhance the rate of higher education amongst the poorer sections of the society through absorption and retention of students in higher education. The institution aims to serve the needs of students indistinctively by making the means and measures available to all. There is no preference based admission which makes higher education easily accessible to students from diverse sections and different merit levels.

The institution had started its journey way back in 1994 as the sole centre of higher education on this isolated piece of land with inadequate infrastructure and human resource. The majority of the students this institution catered to came from the neighbouring villages within the periphery of 2/3kms. In the formative years, the enthusiastic faculties used to take classes in a neighbouring school due to dearth of classrooms in the college. Due to poor transport facilities, many students from the far-off places were initially deterred to take admission in this college. As a result, the student enrolment used to be comparatively low. With due course of time, the institution gained popularity and students from across the valley came to study here. Perceiving the practical necessity of setting up a college in this area, the institution aims at an all encompassing development of students irrespective of class and quality. Silchar College commits to create opportunities for higher education primarily for those hailing from BPL groups, lower middle class, and tea garden labour class and also those who passed out from open school with low percentage in HS. These students are generally deprived admission in most of the leading colleges of the town due to set parameters of percentage for admission in UG programme. Our college emphasizes on equal treatment of all students irrespective of their gender and background. Other values include providing quality education with minimal or zero fee structure, promoting academic, physical, moral and cultural development of students.

Outcome of the Programme:

The institution is said to have achieved practical results in absorbing students not only from different corners of the town but also with low grades from open schools. On one hand, this practice has undoubtedly increased the enrolment strength in the recent years. On the other hand, the institution has signed MOUs with the neighbouring Nehru High School and Tilak Singha Senior Secondary School. This has resulted in many academic and other social and developmental engagements of faculties in various activities. Dr Sumita Singha was invited to Chengcoorie Bagan High School as an expert in the interview board. Ms Swapna Sinha went as a guest to give a deliberation in the inaugural programme of wall magazine in Nehru High School. Ms Kajari Dhar, Dr Uttam Deb, Dr Shamintra Ghosh, Dr Swati DebRoy, Dr Pinky Sarma, Ms Jootee Deb, Dr Sumita Singha, Ms Sanghamitra Sinha have taken classes as when invited. Faculties/students from Silchar College take class in Tilak Singha Senior Secondary School that helps to enhance the teaching/learning experience of the institution.
