Silchar College is situated in a rural setting largely inhabited by socially and economically backward classes including tea garden labourers. With the noble intention for making the doors of higher education open to students of the locality; some dedicated educationists, social workers and conscious public came up together, conducted meetings, raised funds and, finally, laid the foundation of Silchar College on 20th February, 1994. We are grateful to the descendants of Late Tilak Singha who along with the cooperation from the family of Late Mridanga Guru Surjyomani Singha donated the land on which the College stands today. The institution is also indebted to innumerable noble souls who were engaged in initial stage and extended their hands and minds to give this college a real shape.
